The storied Maglificio Maggia textile company specializes in the manufacturing of knit fabrics weaved on circular looms and aimed at the high-end and luxury fashion sectors since the 18th century when it was established in Italy’s Biella textile hub.
Owned by the Maggia family since nine generations, the knitwear company was established within an area known for its woolen manufacturing expertise, which allowed it to leverage its unique positioning as a knitwear producer as a competitive advantage. The transformation into an integrated jersey and knitwear manufacturer was consolidated in the 1990s.
The company was established by Francesco Maggia in Pettinengo, a village nestled among the Biella valleys, and reaches maturity after relocating to a 1780 plant in Occhieppo Superiore, a hamlet on the slopes of the Mucrone mountain, on the left bank of the Elvo creek in the Piedmont region, as a vertically integrated yarn, textile and garment-maker, powered by the turbines installed near the waterway.
Between the First and Second World Wars, Maglificio Maggia dismantled its spinning mill, relying on third party suppliers based in the area to source yarns and raw materials, while in the 1970s and 1980s it inked a range of sport-leaning sponsorships, supporting marquee tennis players including Vitas Gerulaitis, John Newcombe and Billie Jean King.
In the 1990s Umberto Maggia, the family heir and currently president of the board and main stakeholder, sensed the potential for knitwear and dismantled the garment-making department, thus fueling the family business.
The company is currently controlled by three members of the founding family, such as Umberto and his children Giovanna and Ludovico.
